URBAN OASIS HOSTEL: A REVIEW

Unlike the Pyrenees, which separates the Iberian Peninsula from the rest of Europe, Urban Oasis Hostel (UOH) actually connects people and comfort. The newly built hostel which is situated at Akoka,  Yaba, Lagos State is an array of high end architectural masterpiece in design and finishing, even Donald Trump’s wife would fancy a place right here!

Yaba where UOH is located is a suburb of Lagos, Nigeria and is linked to the Lagos Island; a large protected harbour on the coast of Africa, the island was home to the Yoruba fishing village of Eko, which grew into the modern city of Lagos. The city has now spread out to cover the neighbouring islands as well as the adjoining mainland.

Yaba is connected to the Lagos Island by three large bridges which cross Lagos Lagoon to the district of Ebute metta. Yaba plays host to Institutions of higher learning that includes Queen’s College, the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, the Igbo College, The University of Lagos (UNILAG), the Federal School Science and Technical College, Federal College of Education, and the Yaba College of Technology. It also home to the Yaba Magistrate Court.

The present Yaba local council area wears an urban setting; some part however mirrored rural features and these areas are simply referred to as blighted areas like Makoko and Iwaya. Nonetheless, Yaba Local council development area is the commercial nerve centre for all regardless of their political and cultural affiliations.

 On my first visit to the place, it was no surprise that I had to undergo a lengthy security procedure at its main gate. I did get slightly impatient but the sight of several edifices all beautifully laid out, a well paved road and the beautiful landscape made it worthwhile.

As I was ushered into the premises, my eyes took in the gardens below with a conscious pleasure. Palm trees waved in the slight breeze, water gurgled in the tank, and the scent of mimosa was heavy in the air, it was exquisite!
